New Delhi: Former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur has been announced to be awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously, a day before his 100th birth anniversary, Rashtrapati Bhavan announced.

Remembering Karpoori Thakur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “I am very happy that the Government of India has decided to honor the great leader of social justice, Karpoori Thakur ji, with Bharat Ratna. On the occasion of his birth centenary, this decision will make the countrymen proud. Karpoori ji’s unwavering commitment and visionary leadership for the upliftment of the backward and the deprived has left an indelible mark on the socio-political scenario of India. This Bharat Ratna is not only a humble recognition of his incomparable contribution, but it will also further promote harmony in the society.”

After this announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that his years old demand was fulfilled today.
Nitish Kumar wrote on X, “It is a matter of great pleasure to give the country’s highest honor ‘Bharat Ratna’ to former Chief Minister and great socialist leader Late Karpoori Thakur ji. This is a good decision of the Central Government. This highest honor given to Late Karpoori Thakur Ji on his 100th birth anniversary will create positive sentiments among the Dalits, deprived and neglected sections. Who was Karpoori Thakur?
Karpoori Thakur was born on January 24, 1924 in Pittonjhia (now Karpurigram) of Samastipur. Karpuri Thakur was Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar once, Chief Minister twice, MLA for many years and leader of the opposition party.
Karpoori Thakur won the assembly elections for the first time in 1952 and never lost the Bihar assembly elections again.
An incident of Bihar Secretariat when Karpuri Thakur was the Chief Minister became very famous, earlier the lift of the Secretariat building could not be used by the fourth class employees, as soon as he became the Chief Minister, he ensured that now the lift of the Secretariat building can also be used by the fourth class employees.
While being the Chief Minister, he had made it mandatory to work in Hindi in all departments.
In 1977, while being the Chief Minister, he implemented the job reservation of the state by implementing the Mungerilal Commission.
