New Delhi, February 13 : An important diplomatic win for the country occurred on February 12, 2024, when seven of the eight former Indian Navy men who had been held in Qatar since August 2022 returned home. But there was controversy around the release since senior BJP member Subramanian Swamy claimed without evidence that Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was instrumental in gaining their freedom.
The veterans, arrested on alleged espionage charges, faced an initial death sentence commuted to prison terms during diplomatic negotiations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed their release while expressing gratitude to the Qatari government, specifically the Emir. However, the circumstances surrounding their return remained unclear.
Modi should take Cinema star Sharuk Khan to Qatar with him since after MEA and NSA had failed to persuade the Shiekhs of Qatar, Modi pleaded with Khan to intervene , and thus got an expensive settlement from the Qatar Shiekhs to free our Naval officers.

Subramanian Swamy's Allegations:
Amidst this ambiguity, Swamy took to social media, sparking a firestorm with his remarks. He accused the government of failing to secure the release through conventional diplomatic channels and claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi “pleaded” with Shah Rukh Khan for intervention. Additionally, he insinuated an “expensive settlement” with the Qatari authorities.
Shah Rukh Khan's Denial:
The renowned actor swiftly denied these allegations through his manager, Pooja Dadlani. The statement emphasized that Khan played no role in the release, attributing the successful resolution solely to Indian government officials. It further acknowledged the expertise of leaders in handling diplomatic matters and expressed Khan’s happiness for the safe return of Navy personnel.
Government Maintains Silence:
While the MEA welcomed the release and acknowledged the Qatari government’s role, it refrained from addressing or confirming Swamy’s claims about Khan’s involvement. This silence adds to the ambiguity surrounding the situation, leaving room for speculation and skepticism.
Independent Analysts' Views :
Independent analysts offer diverse perspectives on Swamy’s accusations. Some consider them politically motivated attacks on the government, attempting to undermine its diplomatic achievements. Others view them as irresponsible speculations, potentially damaging India’s relations with Qatar.
International Relations Experts Weigh In :
International relations experts emphasize how difficult diplomatic conversations may be. Although they accept that there may be back channels of communication, they stress the significance of depending only on official declarations and ignoring unproven assertions.
Impact on Public Discourse :
The claims made by Swamy have sparked a contentious discussion on news and social media sites. Some agree with his views, while others denounce them as detrimental and without merit. This dispute serves as a reminder of the necessity of fact-checking and the appropriate transmission of information, particularly when it comes to delicate diplomatic issues.
For India, the ex-Navy personnel’s release is a good step. But the controversies surrounding Shah Rukh Khan’s purported involvement raise questions and emphasize how important it is for the administration to communicate openly in order to allay rumors and maintain public confidence. This story serves as a sobering lesson on the damaging effects of unsupported assertions on delicate diplomatic issues and the significance of depending on official sources for correct information.
