Uniform Civil Code Bill will be tabled in Uttarakhand Assembly likely on February 5.
Uniform Civil Code:
The Uniform Civil Code is a proposal to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which apply on all citizens equally regardless of their religion, gender and sexual orientation. Currently, personal laws of various communities are governed by their religious scriptures.
Because this bill is being brought in Uttarakhand, so if this bill is passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly then it will be applicable only to Uttarakhand.
The demand for UCC in Uttarakhand was first raised by BJP in the elections in 2014, although
in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP had raised the issue of Uniform Civil Code in the entire country, but now in the Uttarakhand assembly elections held in 2022, BJP Gave the issue of Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand a prominent place on its agenda.
Uttarakhand government announces a 5-member committee on May 27, 2022, which will be led by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. This committee is asked by the Uttarakhand government to prepare a report for the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand and also prepare a draft bill.
On this, the opposition targeted the government saying that BJP wants to spoil the communal
harmony and divide the society by leaving aside the issue of development.
This committee was to submit its report by November 2022, but with time the deadline for
submitting the report kept increasing again and again. Last year the Chief Minister said that she would complete her work and submit the report by May 2023. The report did not come even till
May 2023, but now the committee is going to submit its report on February 2. Lok Sabha elections are going to be held in the country in a few months from now, so it is also believed that BJP wants to implement Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand just before the Lok Sabha elections.
What could be the impact of the introduction of Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand:
According to the news, this committee is going to focus the most on gender equality. Like there are many Muslim women who say that polygamy, iddat and halal should be abolished in Islam.
For example, the minimum age for marriage is currently 21 years for men and 18 years for women, by changing it the minimum age of men and women can be made equal.
A rule can also come in the Uniform Civil Code. If someone has been in a live-in relationship, then he will have to tell the government for how long he has been living in the live-in relationship
and if they get separated, then they will also have to tell this to the government.
Can Uniform Civil Code come in other states also:
If this bill is passed from Uttarakhand Assembly, then it is believed that very soon this bill can also be introduced in Gujarat and Assam Assembly.
The Gujarat government has already formed a committee for the Uniform Civil Code in 2022 and the Chief Minister of Assam, while leaving the Hindu Ekta Yatra in Karimnagar area of Assam, had said that we strongly support the Uniform Civil Code
